Growth does not just happen

I was in my teens when I had a conversation with a family member who was 40 at the time.

The conversation went something like this:

Me: Why are you still studying at 40?

Family member: I need to make sure I am always up to date with how to do things to climb the ladder.

Me: I am not going to study any further once I have finished college.

Family member: What are your ambitions – what do you want to do?

Me: I want to be a businessperson.

Family member: Do you think you can do that without further study?

Me: Yes, why not?

Family member: We will see.

Me: We will!!

How wrong was I?

To this day, at the age of 65, that same family member is still learning and continues to seek new things to adventure into.

It was not until I started investing in my own growth, that I realized three gaps that stopped me from being intentional about my growth.

Gaps that keep us from growing:

Assumption:

I assumed that I would automatically be a businessperson.

A mistake a lot of us make.

As children our bodies automatically grow but as we get older we take responsibility for our own growth to become the person we want to be.

Not knowing how to grow:

At school we have a set syllabus that we are taken through and the teachers have a plan and guide on what to teach.

The goal for teachers is to see us pass.

We have goals for ourselves but what we do not have is a plan for what we need to do to reach those goals.

We think that we will reach our goals without needing to grow ourselves. This is a mistake that stops most people reaching their goals.

Timing:

One thing I have learnt is that the timing will never be right.

We will always have something going on in life that keeps us from growing.

One of the most common excuses we have is ‘I do not have time.’

I took on my leadership training at one of the busiest times in my career, yet it was the best thing I ever did.

Do not fall into the time gap when trying to reach your goal.

Mistakes:

I used to be afraid of making mistakes.

This stopped me from moving forward in so many areas of my life.

It was on my leadership training that I learnt that I did not have to be afraid of making mistakes.

I very quickly realized that all I had to be afraid of was not learning from my mistakes.
